We had a very good discussion in our Methods and Strategies in Teaching History class a while ago and our topic was about the IDEAL STUDENT for the 21st century. In our discussion, the group who reported about it said that for them, an ideal student must be technologically literate and a critical thinker.
We all know that being technologically literate is a MUST in every student because it is a NECESSITY nowadays, especially in using the computer. Our world is a virtual one and one can get as many information that he wants in just one click of the mouse.
On the other hand, a student must be a critical thinker so that he can separate the relevant informations he is acquiring from the irrelevant ones. To become a critical thinker, a student must also know how to identify the causes and effects of an event and he must also know how to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of several different informations that he's acquiring.
There's no doubt that these two characteristics are important but our professor pointed out that the ideal student that we are discussing is lacking something. She said that the ideal student we are presenting is NOT socially aware. If he is always staring in front of the computer and studying his notes, it is not yet enough. An ideal student must be able to involve himself in society. He must apply to his daily life what he is learning because immersing oneself to society is the completion of his learning. Civic-mindedness and immersion are two manifestations of the learnings that we acquired from all of the sleepless nights that we are devoting for studying.
As we finished our discussion, I realized that I am lacking in the third part. My immersion to the community is insufficient. I have done nothing to apply my learnings for society. With this, I am not promising that I will become actively involved in outreach programs and community services but I can TRY. I don't know how and when but I believe that being part of the upcoming National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute this December is a step in realizing that third factor (I'm going to write my experience about it after it has finished...).
Our lesson a while ago really strucked a chord in me and I'm glad that I was part of our discussion since learning about it, that being studious and computer freak is not enough for a student to be an ideal one. One must not forget his surroundings because it is only here where one gets to experience LIFE.
